About the Douglasville Kennel Club of Georgia, Inc.

DKC's Mission Statement

Promoting the sport of the purebred dog in the community through service, education and sponsoring AKC events. Members show their commitment by exemplifying good sportsmanship and ethical breeding practices.

The American Kennel Club was founded in  1884, the AKC® and its affiliated organizations advocate for the purebred dog as a family companion, advance canine health and well-being.  They also work to protect the rights of all dog owners and promote responsible dog ownership. They do this by promoting the study, breeding, maintenance, and exhibition of purebred dogs.  The AKC is the largest not-for-profit purebred dog registry in the U.S. There are approximately 5,000 dog clubs in the nation that hold affiliated events under the guardianship of the AKC.  We are one of those clubs, and located in the western part of Georgia, Douglas County, the Douglasville Kennel Club of Georgia, Inc..

From the Affenpinscher to the Yorkshire Terrier, the members of the Douglasville Kennel Club strive to know as much about them as we can. Our club was, founded in 1974, in order to promote all breeds of purebred dogs as well as offer sanctioned dog shows which conform to the rules and regulations provided by the American Kennel Club.

The Douglasville Kennel Club hosts two AKC Conformation Shows, one in the spring and the other in the fall. Conformation shows are only one form of sport that shows the thrill of competition combined with the enjoyment of seeing and educating oneself of many breeds of dogs. A conformation show is one type of event that the purebred dog can compete.  Other events that test the dog’s ability to learn and his instincts are events such as obedience trials, tracking tests and field trials, agility, rally, earth-dog events, herding and lure coursing as well as the Canine Good Citizenship and Star Puppy Programs.  Conformation shows are intended to evaluate the dog’s standard set up by the American Kennel Club.  The dog’s conformation (overall appearance, structure and temperament), an indication of the dog’s ability to produce quality puppies, is judged.  Every year the Douglasville Kennel Club has two conformation shows.  These are scheduled in the spring and fall of the year.  To find out more information on the shows please visit our “AKC Events” page.

We hope your visit here will be an educational and pleasant one.  We offer a wealth of information for the kennel owner as well as for the first time dog owner.  We have a variety of club members, which range from the dog fancier to breeders, trainers, professional handlers, judges and everyone else in between.  This gives us the opportunity to help and educate others about the purebred dog and educate the pet owner about the welfare and care of their dog, whether it is purebred or not.  The Douglasville Kennel Club offers training classes for the competition in conformation.  We encourage individuals to enter these classes if interested in learning more about handling, training their dog and dog show competition.
